Thus ... [Hadrian] sought Britain, where he corrected many things and was the first to construct a wall across 80 miles, which divided the barbarians and the Romans.

Book Find!

Last Saturday I was at the Christian Aid Book Sale in Edinburgh where I made several interesting finds, both of books and of stamps, both scholarly and personal, both theological and historical. One such book was Hadrian's Wall by David J Breeze and Brian Dobson.

This book should be helpful to me when I finally get down to work on the mile castle. And maybe this blog, even! Unlike books that are guides to the Wall, this book is a history of the Wall, preoccupied with the Roman presence in northern Britain and the history of why they built Wall and how they built the Wall.

It is not a guidebook and does not claim to be. It is a scholarly history, so I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.

And someday I'll even paint a model or two. Maybe tonight -- I'm starting actually with 1:32 scale gladiators to hone my skills. Pictures will follow the final product.
